A Cool Studio

A Cool Studio is an incredible photo studio that specializes in portraits & families, for stock photography. I worked with Alayna from the studio, who was brilliant to work with. She did most of the site design excluding some of the gallery, contact form, and blog, for which I was more than happy to help out with. The studio wanted an animated site like so many of those flash websites other photographers use. The only difference is that there is no flash. Pretty fun stuff. We opted to not go all ajax for usability reasons, but we were still able to add the animations they wanted. They were very pleased with the outcome and have since returned to me for more work.

Egomedia Photography

I had a blast working with Jenn and Sam from Egomedia photography. Egomedia photography is an award winning boutique wedding photojournalism studio located in the DC metro area. They are exceptional photojournalists and ever better people. This was a fun project. Not a design project by any means. I used their current to design and completely re-coded their entire backend to function they way it was intended. Of course I added some flair and surprises as we went along, but the goal was to let the photos be the main stage, not the design. They loved it! I’m now hosting 2 of their sites as well as still collaborating on future updates.

So it’s that time again, time for another redesign. I have been doing this around once per year. I revealed the last design on May 30th last year, so I’m right on schedule. Let’s hope I like this design a bit more so I can keep it a little longer than a year.

Why do this so soon?

Well to be honest, I never really finished the current design. I mean it’s complete, but when I started adding features over the course of this year I realized this design needed a makeover to add the features I really wanted. When I took a look at the time it would take for me to do this little makeover I decided I really didn’t like the design anymore and didn’t want to waste any more time on it.

Next major reason for this redesign is my portfolio. I set the code up for the portfolio more than a year ago. Since then I have done several WordPress sites that contained a portfolio of sorts, and have realized the current code is not working out. I actually have tons more work I want to display, but I don’t want to add to the code clean up I’m going to have to do when this redesign takes place. Long story short, none of the new portfolio work has been added.

So, what’s up with the design?

I’ve really been getting into destroyed designs. The funny thing is that the typical designs I do from day to day are really clean and strive to be perfect. It may be this fact that really inspired me to do something a little different. JC-V4: Dirty Blond is a different look than your average website, but still keeps a professional perspective (IMHO). I also noticed a pattern with my personal designs. I tend to make the designs dark, and I really wanted to change this stereotype. Take a look at the last three designs and see for yourself.

Design Details

I wanted my new design to have a natural feel. I used hand written fonts and some destroyed fonts. In fact the only perfect fonts will be in the body copy (just the way I wanted it). Next I wanted to use colors that surround me in my daily life. We are currently re-decorating my home office. The colors are different shades of brown and orange/red. I love those color combos and they actually work well online as well. Lastly I wanted the site to have a slight vintage feel. My first rough draft of this design actually went over board and looked like a 1950′s ad. I scaled vintage feel down a notch and really like the way it turned out.

So, what do you think?

I am still playing with colors and details so please feel free to comment. If you don’t like something, or think it’s awesome, let me know. I would definitely want to remove a piece or two if no one liked it. So bring on the critiques, and thanks!

Alex Buga

Alex Buga has got a great sense of style, but what I like most about it is the layout and how it was completely re-imagined. Full of Ajax greatness too!

Nine Lion Design

Nine Lion Design is rocking a wood based design, but the wood has depth and a sense of motion. Love the colors and the overall idea.

Black Wave Creative

Black Wave Creative has got the grunge look down. Sometimes grunge sites can be overwhelming and depressing if not done right. Black Wave Creative is not one of those sites.

45royale

45royale has great colors, but its not only the colors that make it a great site. The site is great because of the way they are using different layouts throughout the site.

Old Loft

Old Loft is just well done design met with well done coding. Kudos.

Works4Sure

Works4Sure Has a great natural feel to it. I love the paper clip and note elements.

I really can’t believe it. There were 90+ websites selected for the initial competition. I was just lucky enough to I have been selected in the WP Freedom Blog coolest WordPress blog top 20! Thanks to all my subscribers, twitter followers, and friends who have wished me luck in this little contest. This just really gets me pumped to get this site completely where I want it, and to also start on a new design. JC-V4.

jQuery & JavaScript

More and more jQuery. Even though I spend a good portion of the day coding in Flash, I am more interested in what can be accomplished with JavaScript without resorting to Flash.

XHTML & CSS

I can wait until all browsers support CSS3, but untill then we’ll settle for the browsers running WebKit.

I wish I could run the world on PHP!

Great WordPress tutorials here. Most of these I already use, but I always read a new tutorial to see if I could be doing it better.

I have been geekn’ out a lot lately reading some really great articles as well as learning some new techniques. There is a little bit of everything here and if you are a web developer it will come in handy. If you are not into jQuery skip this first section, as I have been really digging into what can be done in jQuery. jQuery & JavaScript

If you couldn’t tell, I love working with jQuery. Here is a brief list of some plug ins, some tutorials, and some techniques I found very interesting.

Photoshop is a dominate force in design. I love it and use it for all my Photography work, but when it comes to web design, I find Fireworks to be better suited.
